There’s either something about me that attracts people who will later abandon me or there’s something inside me that doesnt make it worth it to stay.

Im going to go with the former, because the latter is too painful to think about and ignores the people in my life who do stay.

ghanailoveyou:

Artwork exhibited in Nakasero by Ugandan artist Samson Ssenkaaba aka Xenson at the Kampala Contemporary Art Festival 2012

“Today we are seeing a huge dumping phenomenon of second hand products and cheap Chinese brand name knock-offs in many African cities. Most of the second hand goods come through the sea via these containers. Inevitably the containers are the vehicles of a phenomenon that is blind to unsuspecting citizens of these third world economies who at the same time are unaware of the pending gross repercussions.

Through my art I’m trying to create an awareness of the dangers of dumping, which is now common in contemporary Africa. I strive to ask critical but emotionally sensitive questions and solicit information from the audience by highlighting this issue. In turn I believe this will stimulate a thought process and potentially perpetrate the necessary action. There is a critical question however: Can there be a seamless co-existence of technology and economic advancement without tremendous damage to the environment?

My art seeks to represent some conceptual and abstract answers to this question.”

Every morning after
A battle was waged in my mind and soul
I awake to be greeted by
Eyes swelled to twice their size

Like a badge
They remind me
Of the pain that has just crawled
Marched
Dance
Fallen
Out from their lids

They connect me to
Past moments
Drawing a line
Between the separate lives i have lived

     5 am arriving to school
Trying to hide the signs of a war
That has abused my body and soul

      15 years old
Collapsed on the stairs outside
Wondering if I punch myself enough
Will my tears dance me to God

My eyes like a music box broken
Continue to turn with sparse sound
The tiny dancer inside aching for reprieve
And the promise that if she just keeps dancing
Perhaps it will have all been worth it

Every morning
After a battle has been waged in my soul
I awaken to find
The one consistant thing in my life

teachingliteracy:

I used to be a design student is a new publication by Camberwell BA Graphic Design alumni Frank Phillipin and Billy Kiosoglou (Brighten the Corners)

The inspiration for the book came from a talk Frank and Billy gave to Camberwell students. For the talk they decided to present a series of old student projects alongside work they had completed since graduating.

The students responded extremely well to the talk, not only in terms of being able to relate to the student projects, but also to the fact that through seeing a ‘then’ and ‘now’ the idea of becoming a professional designer appeared far more attainable. Realising that other people’s work would offer similar insights the idea for the book was born.

50 designers were invited to share one student project and one professional project for inclusion in the book. They were also asked to offer a piece of advice and a warning!

queennubian:
